Tim,
Hello. My name is Diego I'm a cinema student from Peru. I
don't know if you can help me, but I don't know anywhere
else to go. I'm searching for help anyway. The thing is that
I recently bought a camcorder on-line, in a store called
B&H. Everything was ok the first month, after that, the
unit had some technical problems, I immediately got in touch
with the store and they said I didn't have the right to a
return or an exchange, they said they could only repair it.
Despite my anger, I sent it back for repair. After a month,
I had the camcorder back, but the problem still remains, in
addition it has a new technical problem that didn't exist
when I sent it. I contacted them again, demanding a new camcorder, I
think is fair. They have avoid my claim and haven't answer
me clearly and straight. I would like some advise,
information, or at least if you can tell me and contact me
with an organization that could hear my case and give me
some guidance or support in my claims. Thank you very much
in advance
Diego

Diego,
I get a lot of complaints about Internet camera
companies. They advertise significantly lower prices than
local stores sometimes several hundred dollars less.
They can do this because they sell Gray Market
merchandise. Gray market products are made to be sold in
countries other than the U.S.They are made to different
standards and most always come with manuals in another
language other than English with a manufacturer's warranty
that is not honored in the US.
If you were in the US when you made the purchase and
paid with a credit card you have some rights. You have sixty
days from the time you receive your statement with the
charge on it to register a dispute with the credit card
company.
The process can be started with a call to the credit
card company but must be followed up with a written
complaint. The address to send your complaint and an
explanation of your rights can be found on the back of your
credit card statement.
If you were in Peru when the transaction was made and
your credit card statement goes to an address in Peru you
should call the credit card company to see what rights if
any you have. If you don't feel that they want to help, call
MasterCard or Visa International for assistance, providing
your card has a Visa or MasterCard logo. Let me know the
outcome.
Good Luck
Tim
