Letters to Tim
Mike's Big Problem

To whom it may concern:

I don't have a "consumer" problem per se, but I was hoping someone there might be able to give me some advice.

I've fairly recently bought a home in the city of Lakewood, CA. I have come across a problem that I would consider to be big one.

As I've discussed this with people over the last two years, I have come to find out that it is a big problem with many people all over the county. (I didn't want to type it all out. It could get long.) I need to conduct a city wide survey or just contact large numbers of people so that I can get numbers of people behind my efforts to initiate a law.

I've contacted city hall in the city that I live in and they won't help. All I was asking for was advice. I even told them that I would do the work. Would you happen to know how I can get this done?

Sincerely, Mike

Tim's Answer

Mike,

Not having any idea of what you conceive as a big problem, or if you are someone that thinks buildings should be lined with tin foil to keep out space aliens or worse yet the CIA from reading your thoughts, I will err on the side of caution and give you the directions that I would take.

Write out the entire problem and then rewrite over and over again until you have removed all of the extra verbiage that doesn't need to be there.

After doing this write a summary of what you have written keeping it to one double spaced page or less putting the most emphasis on the first paragraph. Send this summary to your local city council person and also to the county supervisor that represents your district. Make your cover letter only one paragraph.

If you get no response to your letters then the next step would be to go to a city council meeting and/or a county board of supervisors meeting and address the problem during the open forum. It would be a good idea to go to a couple of meetings first to get a feel for how they handle their open forums.

I would also contact your local newspaper and see if they would be interested in doing a story on you and your problem. If the problem has enough general interest you could also contact the local television stations.

This is best done in written form as you are less likely to run into an intern that my not be the brightest bulb on the tree.

If the above doesn't get the results that you are looking for, then I would contact the local bar association and ask for a list of public interest law firms.

If all of this seems like a lot of work, it is. So you might also consider doing some volunteer work or at the very least get a lot of tin foil.

Good luck and let me know what happens.

P.S. Keep a sense of humor-you'll need it.

Tim
