What’s In Your Chicken?

Do you or your family eat chicken? I’m sure you do (The average Family consumes 48 pounds of chicken per person at home each year.)

Do you really know what’s in it?

Like the majority of consumers I thought when you bought chicken at the supermarket all you took home was chicken. Boy was I wrong!

Last year I was shocked to learn that in addition to the chicken in the package some processors add Water or Chicken Broth, Salt and Phosphates and call it Enhanced chicken.

So what’s wrong with this?

First the water or chicken broth, the average family spends up to $40.00 a year extra to have this added to their chicken, which can increase the weight up to 15%.

Next is the salt unlike the water which only effects your wallet, the Doctors I’ve talked to tell me the extra salt up to (540 milligrams) can have a direct effect on your health if you are on a salt restricted diet for a number of health conditions including high blood pressure.

Will Phosphates harm you? I have no idea. What I do know is phosphates are not in chicken naturally and anything used to make Fertilizer, Dishwashing and Laundry Detergent is not something I want to feed to my family.

Now you might think you can wash off the extra salt and phosphates. Wrong? The salt and phosphates along with the water or chicken broth are mechanically forced into the chicken meat.

Like I said at the beginning the processors that do this call it Enhanced Chicken a better name would be Manufactured Chicken.

What can you do to protect your family?

Read the label, look at the salt/sodium content, look for the words phosphates, chicken broth and enhanced. Then you can make an informed decision on what you want to feed your family.

I feed my family only 100% natural chicken! What have you been feeding yours?
