Last Thursday after work Mary
Connors (not her real name) went to the mall to pick up a
few things for her son's birthday party Saturday. She will
never get to the party. Her body was found in a drainage ditch
10 miles from the mall. She had been strangled and sexually
assaulted, and her van has not been found.
Now the mall that Mary went to was in a good section of
town and fairly well lit. The last time she was seen alive
was at the party store in the mall. Mary only lived 1/2 a
mile from the mall! What happened?
When they caught an ex-convict trying to use Mary's
credit card he confessed to waiting outside the mall and
shoving Mary into her car, When she came out with her
purchases.
Detective Barnes who interrogated the suspect was
curious. Why was Mary picked to rob? There were a lot of
other more expensive cars, and more attractive women in the
mall that night. Why was Mary targeted?" The suspect
stated without hesitation it was her license plate!"
Her license plate, Detective Barnes repeated, "What did
her license plate have to do with Mary becoming a
victim?"
The suspect continued that when he was in prison the last
time he learned from another inmate the best way to pick a
target was to find a car in the parking lot that had
personalized plates that would indicate the driver was
either female or elderly and then hide by the car until the
victim came out. This was much safer than following the
victim from the Store as he might be seen, or the victim
might see him running up to her and screen. Another problem
there might be someone else in her car waiting for her, no
it was much better to checkout the car first.
(Now let me stop here and tell you that this is a
dramatization)
But it does happen! An awful lot of victims are not
picked randomly. A lot of criminals pick their victims by
their vanity plates, or license plate frames. You've seen
them Sue LVB, Grandma, Blondie, Ant B, etc, etc. And that's
just the license plates! License plate frames the
personalized provide even more information such as,
"Every Girl Needs a Little Escort, Shop Till I drop,
Billy and Bobbies Grandma." Etc.
In conclusion it is this author's recommendation if you
have a personalized license plate, or license plate frame
that indicates that you are female and/or elderly I
wholeheartedly suggested that you remove the license plate
frames and go directly to the Department of Motor vehicles
and get a regular license plate. This will not guarantee
that you'll not become a victim in the future, but it does
eliminate one of the ways that criminals pick their victims.
